It is estimated that 2 billion people worldwide are overweight or obese and 40.6% of the Spanish child population is overweight (Estudio Aladino, 2019). Obesity is related to a greater risk of suffering different diseases (cardiovascular ones, diabetes, etc.) that affect the quality of life of people and their well-being. A healthy diet can help fight obesity. Despite everything, population do not have much training in food and nutrition issues. To buy food appropriately to our nutritional needs, it is a priority to read and understand the information that is provided on the label of packaged foods. A correct comparison of the nutritional labelling and the list of ingredients between similar foods is essential to implement healthy habits and choose those foods that have a lower content of salt, sugar and saturated fats and/or a higher content of fibre, and mono and polyunsaturated fats.
With the aim of responding to this social need, in 2022 we created the Teaching Innovation Group «Feeding ourselves with Science Knowledge and Consciousness» at the University of Vigo, which focused in bringing knowledge about food to university and pre-university students , training them as consumers and developing an active spirit in promoting their health.
